This really puzzled my students. When we looked at the hint and then the answer, they realized there was a mistake. 8 divided by 4 is 2, not 6.

I think so. Instead of 8/4=2 and 6/3=2, you could say 8/4=6/3=2. Also, you can think of it as three parts. Each one equals the same thing. Part one is 8/4 or 2, part 2 is 6/3, or 2, and part 3 is 2.

I allowed them to put 2 digits in a line if they wanted to. This helped.
