Directions: Using the digits 1 to 9, at most one time each, place a digit in each box to create an equation such that the solution is the largest integer possible.

Hint

How might a backwards approach be able to support you? What is an integer?

Answer

  1. One of my students came up with:
    3/4 x + 1 = 5/8 x + 9
    x=64

    Prompt says largest integer possible, so isn’t there only one solution?

  2. We got x=120 with 1/5x+9=2/8x+3

  3. Credit to student in grade 8:

    (5/9)x +8 = (4/7)x +1

    x=441
