Add Fractions with Decimal Sums

Directions: Using the digits 1 to 9, at most one time each, place a digit in each box to make the smallest possible decimal sum.

Hint

What is the smallest possible whole number the sum could be?

Answer

• 14/7 + 3/6 = 2.5
• 18/9 + 3/6 = 2.5

There may be more ways to get the sum, but I couldn’t find any more.

    I can confirm that 14/7 + 3/6 = 2.5 and 18/9 + 3/6 = 2.5 are the only two ways to get the sum 2.5 and that 2.5 is the lowest sum possible.

  8. Ms Mills 5th graders agree that 2.5 is the lowest possible sum! We had so much fun solving this problem! Lots of productive struggle!

  11. 10/9 + 2/8 = 1.11 + 0.25 = 1.36

  14. 01/2 + 3/9 = 0.88

  15. 14/7+3/6=2.5

  16. 12/3 + 4/5 = 4.8 because 12/3 = 4.Also 4

    + 4/5= 4 4/5 which is 4.8.
